Dockerizing Your PHP Application: A Practical Guideaaa

June 3, 2026 · 1 min read · 138 words

Every PHP developer has heard it: "But it works on my machine!" Docker solves this permanently by packaging your application and all its dependencies into a portable container.

What You Will Build

By the end of this guide you will have a three-service stack:

  • nginx — reverse proxy and static file serving
  • php-fpm — PHP 8.3 FastCGI process manager
  • mysql:8.3 — the database, with persistent volume

The Dockerfile

FROM php:8.3-fpm-alpine

RUN docker-php-ext-install pdo pdo_mysql
COPY . /var/www/html

WORKDIR /var/www/html

Environment Variables

Never hardcode credentials. Use a .env file locally and secrets management in production. Docker Compose reads .env automatically.

Containers are immutable. If you are modifying a running container to fix something, you are doing it wrong.

Next Steps

Once your stack is running locally, the next step is adding a health check, a production multi-stage build, and hooking it into your CI/CD pipeline.
